UTCO Video: Changing Lives, Changing Communities: Reducing the Costs of Diabetes through Prevention and Control
THE UT COMMUNITY OUTREACH (UTCO) PROGRAM is a collaborative endeavor of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston School of Public Health (SPH) dedicated to the prevention and control of chronic disease. In 2009, the Texas Legislature inaugurated the program with a grant provided through the Texas Diabetes Council (TDC) and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). With continued funding from the U. S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), UTCO has implemented a wide varierty of community-based programs for Texans with or at risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes. UTCO activities focus on lifestyle interventions (education, nutrition and physical activity) that are proven effective in controlling and preventing chronic illness. All services are free and available at times and in in locations easily accessible to the public.
